Dr. B’s Aloha Leis
I count my blessings then push away from worries …
I am an active university professor in my 42 year in education (2008-09), preparing future teachers on Kauai. I started making these leis (taught to me by one of the teacher candidates) as gifts for teachers in our Kauai schools that mentor our future teacher candidates. Later I got ‘hooked’ on making the leis for ‘therapeutic’ reasons.
My leis are made from wrapping special yarn around a tube then pushing the yarn down the tube onto the ribbon, which gives it its strength and will not unravel. As I wrap the yarn around the tube multiple times, I “count my blessings and then push away my worries”! (See why it is therapeutic?)
In Hawaii, we “talk story” all the time and I have a ‘story’ for almost every Hawaiian lei I make. Some of the leis are ‘made’ in special places and have a unique story to them.
Look for the ‘talk story’ leis or “design a story” for me to make your lei on Kauai.
When I sell the leis there is a small profit (I donate my time) and all profit goes to a “good cause”. As it is now, profit from the leis go to teacher candidates in the University of Hawaii’s Teacher Education Statewide program. (If and when I will be able to afford only to do profit to future teachers, but for now, all profit goes to the teacher candidates!)
