Organic Coffee Farming

When Robert and Dawn Barnes decide to do something, they ‘got for it’ with an entrepreneurial spirit to envy; the ability to live up to a challenge, and win. Kona RainForest Coffee is located just below the South Kona Forest Reserve, 42 acres of wonderland nestled between lave flows on both sides with deep rich, rocky, lave-free soil within. A native rain forest to giant ohia trees, wild orchids, ferns wild turkeys, pheasants, board and other smaller critters all share their organic farm.

That’s a lot of difficult land to farm, weeds to tend, etc. Together with Jackson the dog and over 100 reinforcements of geese and ducks, they rigorously walk the terrain (20% grade that peaks at the 2250 foot level) and practice good fertilizing techniques.  In fact every thing they do on the farm is 100% alive and nurturing and important in maintaining an organic coffee farm.   This is one special  farming process – of course no herbicides are ever used and everything is either pulled by hand, cut with a weed whipper or mowed with the tractor.  This is serious coffee making!

We asked Kona Rainforest Coffee what their favorite customer comment is, here’s what Dawn had to say “What is our favorite customer compliment? That’s hard because we get so many and I love them all. One of our favorites is when Daniel Shanks, from the White House called to re-order, we asked him if he wanted to order Extra Fancy again. His response was “we call it Extra Special here”
