Malama Shannon :-)

Another great find – people find that is.  Shannon Nakaya DVM is a special person.  Located on the Big Island, Shannon spends her time with her private house call and pet hospice practice, in addition to sharing it all with two tortoises, three birds, two goats, one dog, and one human.

We read about Shannon often in the local newspapers, she gracefully comes to the resuce of many wild and unfortunate critters.  Recently she helped save the life of a Pueo, the Hawiian owl. Quoted in the West Hawaii Today,   “It’s very rewarding when all goes well,”  said Shannon, who worked with an anesthesia nurse on the delicate operation.  “These birds often arrive in horrible shape and on the brink of death. It’s an exciting event when one recovers and can be returned to its rightful home.”

Special mention about Shannon’s outstanding book Kindred Spirit, Kindred Care: Making Health Decisions on Behalf of Our Animal Companions. Helping people to make customized decisions on behalf of their animal companions.

Mahalo Dr. Nakaya – Hawaii’s wildlife is thankful for your kokua.

When our pet Cockatiel Frankie (Sinatra) broke his leg, Shannon came to the rescue. Try casting a little bird leg! Shannon did it with expertise and compassion, bringing Frankie back to his ornery self.

Shannon Nakaya has been our vet since 2004(or 2003). We have 7 dogs, 8 cats, 5 macaws, numerous chickens, and sheep. I don’t think mere words can describe the gratefulness we feel to have Shannon help us care for our beloved animals. Always steady, even in a crisis, Shannon has helped us make better, alternative, and positive decisions. Thanks for all you do Shannon!!!

    Hi Dr Shannon,
I think we have had our share of phone tag…so I am writing…I don’t have the paperwork on Chester for your analysis..he seems to be declining quickly.. less movement and less appetite..I am worried about him. It’s obvious it bothers him o have his head and ears touched… He is on the predisone Dr Jordan prescribed. He’s itchy and thirsty.

He isn’t following me around today… However he did make it back upstairs though he spent most of his morning in the room that has the baby chicken coop… He loves our baby chicks…he has watched over at least 3 generations of chicks… What othr signs do I need to look for…How long do I let him live in this condition.. Could you take a look and honestly evaluate him. Dr Jordan said Chester has Lymphoma the blood test said it was a very aggressive form that was almost a week ago..I took him to the Vet 2 weeks ago because I thought he had an upper respiratory infection.

    He sleeps a lot… Amy 345-0789
