Upstairs at the Mill in Hawi

upstairs at the mill hawifudge ohana

If it’s Wednesday, it must be …

Chocolate!  We’ve known about the Mill in Hawi for a very long time.  THE place to go when in North Kohala (the Big Island) for coffee, ice cream and interesting locals.  But the upstairs portion is new to us.  This area has seen several different businesses over the years – none seem to have what it takes to survive in this rural community.  Not anymore.  The Mill took it over and turned the place into a comfy, warm, and inviting place to visit while you check your email, chat with friends, bask in the sun on the patio and what else – TRY THE HOMEMADE FUDGE.

We were a little weary from our hiking with Hawaii Forest & Trail.  Our guide Mark told us all to hang out at The Mill  where he would pick us up in the van for the return trip to Kona.  And “oh” he said “try the fudge upstairs” …

ANYTHING related to chocolate goes to the top of our priority list, if you haven’t already figured out.  Immediately the group gravitated upstairs where “Ohana” was busy preparing another batch of fudge.  As soon as we stopped drooling, the words came out, “may we please try a sample?”  Ohana sliced off the first of several tastes.  This one was liloqui and chocolate.  Bliss.  Next we tried maple nut.  Bliss.  Then butter pecan.  Bliss.  Then mint chocolate chip. Bliss. Then chocolate and caramel with mac nuts – end of bliss – enter nirvana.  Time to buy.

Thing is – we recently purchased some homemade fudge from another key find in Hawaii and had intended to SAVE it for Mom’s visit in November – except we ate it within 24 hours.  At the Made in Hawaii Festival  – we replaced that stuff with the incredible Hawaiian Fudge Sauce – and finished that by the time we returned home.  What to do?

We bought 1lb of the chocolate liloqui, bliss again.  The chocolate and caramel fudge we knew there was no hope for – wouldn’t last the end of the day.  The carefully wrapped (more like a gift box) box of fudge sat nicely in our fridge for a few hours.  But by the evening – half was gone.  By the next day – after looking up on our Diet Guru for how many calories and sugar and fat we were consuming and what the trade off wold be – we learned Fudge isn’t so bad after all, actually kinda low in all the bad stuff.  We finished off the box before we re-read the information and learned that’s right for a 1″ square, but not the brownie sized bites we chopped off.

Learning is so much fun.

To order fudge from The Mill it’s a simple phone call – they don’t have a website (yet) but they do SHIP to anywhere in the world and get orders ALL the time via phone.  If it works for others, it works for us!  We tried it all, every slice is bliss, we sneaked behind the counter to make sure the ingredients are Really Hawaiian, and we asked around our network of Hawi spies – they ALL agree – this stuff is delicious.  We’ll be back soon Ohana – see you then!
